HEW 99

Show Report - Day 1
by Petra Struck, translated by Martin Baute

When I reached the hall 11.2 yesterday morning at about 8:45 AM, last adjustments
were made everywhere, and so I had the chance to take my time and have a first
look at the show. Of course it was obvious that many of the big Amiga companies
were not present this year, which could already be seen from the
list of exhibitors
of the HEW´99. For one, this is due to some companies already having withdrawn
from the Amiga market, but also due to financial ressources being insufficient to
fund an expensive exhibition booth. The hall was much less full than last year.

The exhibition was opened on time at 10:00 AM, and the booths of AMIGA, Schatztruhe,
Haage & Partner, RBM Digitaltechnik, COOLbits, Epic-Marketing and APC & TCP
were at once beleagured for the latest software. The many smaller booths of developers
like KATO, individual computers, DCE and Eyetech saw many visitors. People visited the
booths of the different Amiga clubs, too, where discussions were held the whole day.

Together with Martin Baute, I spend the whole day collecting many informations about
news and updates. Since we didn't visit all booths today, I will concentrate on the
atmosphere in today's small report. The description of the seperate booths I will
collect in a exhibition special after the show, and I can already promise you some
interesting news.

About atmosphere, I could write it mas mixed, but that wouldn't get it. Bothered,
depressed would be better. It's simply the lack of a clear path, if and how things
will go on. On the other side, it is astounding with how much enthusiasm the remaining
developers, programmers and distributors carry on. Even more astounding to see a
PPC G3 (400 MHz) developer board by Haage & Partner at the AMIGA booth, which could
possibly mark the beginning of the next Amiga generation.

Here, you can see the first pictures.

13.11.1999:
I must have been very tired yesterday, because I didn't mention that I very much
enjoyed the show, and that the user's moods is very enlightened despite the situatuin.
At the Amiga-Club booth, which is of course our "basis camp", there was always a
crowd of users. As every year, questions were asked about any possible subject;
moreover, there was Aaron Digulla presenting AROS. Details will follow in the
exhibition special.

One hint in advance: The new Developer CD version 2.1 includes the StormC 68k C/C++
compiler version 3.0.
